Riccardo Mataloni picture.jpg

Riccardo Mataloni was born in Rome, where he actually lives and works.

In creating his art, he uses of a variety of materials, in particular recycled scrap objects.

One objective of his work is to give refuse materials a new identity, reviving them as paradoxical presences worthy of being noticed. He often uses worn-out objects, incorporating their imperfections in his works while restoring and renewing their appearance, though without ever glossing over their original rough spots.

The aim is to uncover the hidden features of the scrap materials, revealing their underlying nobility and worth.

The point of the vivid colours applied to the often grey, muted hues of the scrap objects is to supply information that can either complete or destructure the meaning of a given work.

What prompts the artist to reformulate one object rather than another is an immediate, emotional urge to complete its form through any number of different techniques, thus the inspiration to constantly experiment with new materials and approaches, with the result that the final creations can prove extremely varied and multifaceted.

In working with materials which cannot be replicated, the creative impulse can lead him, at times, to proceed in an instinctive, almost primitive fashion, the most prized outcome of which is a small, ‘imperfect’ beauty.
